Server Update

by Nasrin • May 4, 2010

News Flash

Hi bloggers, just a quick update. If you’ve experienced sluggishness recently while using our site, it’s because of increased traffic. We are in the process of acquiring all the servers we need to handle this usage. We’re scheduled to start installing them next week, and hope to have them come online in two or three weeks from now. Once our new servers are up, we expect to be able to handle all incoming traffic.

While we work on getting everything in order, you might experience a slight delay in the page to opt out, but performance should have been consistent for these past few days.

Thank you all for your patience, and stay tuned as we work to implement upcoming improvements to your user experience.

In searching for myself on spokeo, I found that an old work email address still links to information about me, such as my amazon.com wish list, and photos from a blog. I cannot remove the listing through the privacy settings, because the confirmation email must be sent to the account you’re trying to remove.

What I find most disturbing is that this email address is not currently affiliated with the accounts for which it pulls up information, and hasn’t been in some time, since I changed jobs over a year ago. Moreover, my amazon.com wish list is set to “private” on amazon, so it should not be publicly viewable at all.

Is there any way to remove the listing for a prior email address?

You can remove email address search results through our privacy page as well. Perform a search on the email address in question, and then use the URL of page to use for the privacy page. Here is the link for the privacy page: http://www.spokeo.com/privacy

If you encounter any difficulties, please email our Privacy Team so that they can assist you and help remove your listing: privacy@spokeo.com

    Thanks!

We are actively working on improving the removal limitations, and making it an easier process for everybody. Some limitations have to be in place to prevent spammers, bots, and others from removing hundreds or listings at a time. We understand that some people have multiple listings, and more than 2 or 3 people in their household. If you continue to experience difficulties removing your listing, please contact our Privacy Team at: privacy@spokeo.com, so that they can assist you.

    Katie,
I have tried to remove through the privacy page – the problem is that because the email I am trying to block is an OLD work email account, when I paste in the URL, and then provide my CURRENT email address for
confirmation, I receive an error message stating that “Email search removal verification may only be sent to the address being removed. Email must be [old email address].”

I no longer have access to the email address I am trying to block, since I have left my previous job and it is no longer an active email address. I tried emailing the Privacy Team but just received a generic “this is how you block an email address” message, and no response to my request for further assistance. I would appreciate any help you could provide.

P.S. You may wonder why I care about blocking a former email that’s no longer in use. It’s because it somehow pulls up current information from blogs and accounts that haven’t been linked to that email address in over a year (and some of which are set to private and not currently publicly available or searchable/findable through google, etc.), which I find troubling.

Thank you for providing more information. Since this is a special case where you do not have access to that email address, please send the URL of the listing and a summary of what you’ve explained to me to our Privacy Team (privacy@spokeo.com), so that they can remove it for you. I’ll make sure to mention this issue to our engineers as well. Spokeo is working on improving the opt out process, making it easy and accessible for all.
